The VIIC U-552 was approximately 67 meters (220 feet) long and had a crew of 44 men. It was powered by two diesel engines on the surface and two electric motors when submerged, and was capable of reaching a top speed of approximately 17 knots (31 kilometers per hour) on the surface and 7 knots (13 kilometers per hour) when submerged. The VIIC U-552 was armed with 14 torpedoes, one 8.8 cm (3.46 in) deck gun, and one 2 cm (0.79 in) anti-aircraft gun. It was used primarily for attacking Allied shipping in the Atlantic Ocean, and was responsible for sinking over 30 Allied ships during the war.
